Tired of Acne scars?

Updated: Oct 1

Acne scars can be frustrating to deal with, but understanding them better might help in managing and treating them. Here are some interesting facts about acne scar.

Different Types of Scars: Acne scars come in various forms. The most common types are:

  • Atrophic Scars: These are depressed scars and include ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars.

  • Hypertrophic Scars: These are raised scars, more common on the chest and back.

  • Keloid Scars: A type of hypertrophic scar that grows beyond the boundary of the original wound.

Collagen’s Role

Scars form due to the body’s attempt to heal acne wounds. The severity of the scar depends on how much collagen is produced during healing. Too little collagen results in depressed scars, while too much leads to raised scars.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Not all dark marks after acne are scars. PIH is a temporary discolouration that occurs after the inflammation of acne, usually appearing as red, brown, or purple spots.

Genetic Predisposition

Some people are more prone to acne scars due to genetic factors. If your family has a history of scarring, you might be at higher risk.

Treatment Options

Various treatments are available, depending on the type of scar. These include laser therapy, chemical peels, microneedling, dermal fillers, and even surgery for severe cases.

Sun Exposure Worsens Scarring

UV exposure can darken scars and prolong the healing process. Using sunscreen daily is crucial to prevent this.

Scars Can Improve Over Time

While acne scars don’t disappear completely on their own, they often become less noticeable over time as the skin continues to regenerate.

Hormonal Influence

Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, can lead to more severe acne, increasing the likelihood of scarring.

Inflammation Severity

The more inflamed a pimple, the more likely it is to scar. Popping pimples can increase inflammation and thus the risk of scarring.

Acne Scars vs. Acne Marks

Acne marks (like PIH) are not true scars and can fade over time, whereas true acne scars are a permanent change in the skin's texture.

Understanding these aspects of acne scars can help in making informed decisions about prevention and treatment.
